REVERSE INNOVATION

How much can you learn about your own organisation by applying a combination of your own experience, along with core innovation principles, to address someone else’s challenges?

How many of your own challenges can you solve in the process?

By applying the reverse innovation principles that underpin our Propagate programme we’re confident that the answer is a lot.

Described by one participant, Propagate provides ‘a unique forum to network, share ideas, understand business from a different perspective. Everything relates directly to your workplace, not hypothetical management speak. Inspiring, motivating, thought-provoking.’

At a recent innovation practice session delivered for partners of the Innovation SuperNetwork, we ran a reverse innovation taster, capitalising on the knowledge and experience of more than 30 expert minds.

In just an hour, we analysed a business case study, identifying potential pitfalls, barriers and challenges, and outlined dozens of potential solutions and approaches.

What we didn’t have time for was impact analysis, prioritisation or further development of the ideas that would likely generate most reward and how to implement them.

What we did demonstrate was the value of an agile approach, free from the distractions of day-to-day routines and expectations, and the opportunity to hear from peers how they, and their organisations, operate in key areas.

For any larger organisations looking to create intrapreneurs, innovation champions or ambassadors this outside-in approach is likely to be invaluable. As is the opportunity to get under the skin of a real-life entrepreneur (unfortunately, for the taster we didn’t have the owner of the case study business in the virtual room with us).

In return for welcoming managers from larger businesses into their world, offering a glimpse into the entrepreneurial mindset and a perspective on the imperatives that drive them, the owners of small but growth-focused businesses benefit from having a team albeit temporarily that they couldn’t otherwise afford.
